On Wednesday, August 4th, the EHTP Middle School Program took the summer’s theme of exploration to new heights by visiting the Brooklyn Boulders (BKB) climbing center.
The adventure, graciously donated by Brooklyn Boulders and it’s committed staff, was a first for nearly all our students and many of our staff. Having studied both failed and successful historical expeditions to Antartica and Mt. Everest, the students were excited to test their own teamwork, planning, and athletic skills on BKB’s challenging walls.
The students practiced their figure-8 knots and cheered each other on as they took turns climbing. EHTP staff, who were generously trained free of charge by BKB’s impressive staff, supported each climber and ensured they made it to the top. Afterward students reflected on their own experience of exploration and on their new appreciation of the mental and physical challenges faced by the explorers they had read about.

The students and staff of the East Harlem Tutorial Program extend their sincerest thanks to our Junior Board Member Joe Cosentino for organizing this event and to Brooklyn Boulders and their staff – especially Roger delaCruz; Brendan Hendry, and Stephen Spaeth – for their generosity and guidance. After our trip, we expect our students to continue pushing themselves to tackle new challenges. Thanks, and climb on!

On behalf of our students and families, EHTP extends a heartfelt thanks to our many generous friends and supporters who made June 16th such a remarkable evening. Our 24th Annual Spring Benefit transformed Chelsea Piers into an inspiring night filled with music, art, and revelry, where more than 250 of New York’s most coveted corporate leaders, philanthropists, educators, and socialites gathered to support EHTP’s after school and summer programs for hundreds of youth and families in East Harlem.

We are thrilled to report that by the evening’s end, EHTP had surpassed our fundraising goal for the event. Acclaimed author Calvin Trillin served as emcee. Co-chairing were famed restaurateur Lili Lynton and Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company President Bill Wilson. Honorary Co-Chairs Joyce B. Dinkins and Mary D. Lindsay also contributed to the event’s tremendous success. Adding to the evening’s festivities was the exciting announcement of East Harlem Tutorial Program’s charter school, set to open in fall 2011.
