EHTP Public Charter School Seeks Founding Principal   

East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP), a community based organization founded in 1958, seeks candidates interested in serving as the founding principal for its new public charter K-8 school, opening Summer 2011.  

The Founding Principal will be hired as early as June 2010. S/he will be given office space, an extensive start up budget, and wide ranging autonomy to plan and staff the school during the planning period. 

Position Overview

The Founding Principal is responsible for setting a vision for student achievement and motivating others to follow that vision. S/he will implement the school’s mission through effective leadership, management and support of the school’s students and staff. The Principal’s leadership will result in an instructional program and school environment that prepares every student for success in high school, college and beyond. 

Responsibilities

The Principal leads, manages and oversees all functions of the school, including the following duties: 

Prove That All Students Can Learn & Succeed

?       Set and enforce high standards for student achievement.

?       Ensure program meets or exceeds yearly student outcome goals.

 Drive Results

?       Develop organizational goals and objectives consistent with the mission and values of EHTP

?       Foster a school climate that supports both student and staff success and promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents that is aligned with the mission and values of the school.

?       Monitor progress of self, school, student and staff goals.

?       Manage student recruitment and enrollment process.

?       Ensure high standards for student behavior, performance, and attendance.

?       Address any disciplinary issues immediately.

?       Lead long term strategic planning and medium term process improvement as needed.

?       Foster a mutually supportive relationship with a high functioning Board of Directors 

Provide Instructional Leadership

?       Recruit, manage, evaluate, develop and retain a team of extraordinary teachers.

?       Ensure use of effective, research?based teaching methodologies and practices.

?       Work with teachers to improve their teaching practice through coaching, professional development, modeling, and collaborative planning.

?       Keep abreast of successful instructional methodologies and practices.

?       Ensure consistencies in instruction and practice amongst team of teachers.

?       Ensure learning environment and classroom instruction maximize student learning. 

Manage Operations

?       Manage all resources at school site.

?       Set and maintain a budget that ensures fiscal solvency.

?       Approve expenditures.

?       Oversee facilities maintenance and repairs.

?       Oversee management of school administrative processes, records and resources.

?       Ensure compliance with funding sources, local school district, and other stakeholders.

?       Ensure compliance of local, state, and federal laws and regulations and court orders.

?       Ensure compliance with restrictions and reporting requirements.

?       Ensure the safety and security of all students, staff, visitors, and public and private property.

?       Plan for future needs. 

Manage People

?       Communicate the vision that supports the school’s goals and values.

?       Create an effective, collaborative team of people jointly responsible for the attainment of school goals and committed to achieving excellence.

?       Manage all human resources at school site.

?       Recruit, select and hire high?performing staff.

?       Manage performance of all staff.

?       Develop a collaborative team culture. 

Requirements:

The Founding Principal must be passionate, energetic, highly organized, and entrepreneurial. 

A Bachelor’s degree is required.

An Ed.M., J.D., M.A., M.B.A., or M.P.A. is preferred.

Demonstrated leadership in classroom and extensive experience using data to inform instruction.

A record of classroom success with low-achieving students

State certification is not required.

 About East Harlem Tutorial Program

East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) gives kids the opportunities they would have if they were born 20 blocks south. And, we’ve been doing it for more than 50 years. Year-round, during out of school time, we teach reading and math, provide one-to-one tutoring, prepare kids for college, help them get accepted, and build the social skills they’ll need to succeed. We also get kids through college and ready for the real world.
