Lead Teacher – Summer 2010 

East Harlem Tutorial Program, a dynamic, nationally-known out-of-school education program, seeks a part-time Lead Teacher for Summer, 2010 with classroom experience developing and implementing creative, child-centered educational activities and individualized student plans for elementary school students.  Activities occur during our 5-week summer program. The Lead Teacher supervises a Teaching Assistant as well as interns and volunteers.

East Harlem Tutorial Program has been serving students and families from el Barrio and East Harlem for 51 years.  Program participants are children of color from lower socio-economic households and failing schools.  EHTP offers a professional, relaxed, community and family-oriented environment, along with numerous opportunities for staff, including mentoring, regular supervision, professional development training, and opportunities for advancement.   

RESPONSIBLITIES

Overall Direction of Learning for Elementary School Program

  • Plans, implements, and supervises daily schedule of educational activities for elementary school cohort.
  • Leads and coordinates development, implementation, and monitoring of Individualized Student Plan for each student. 

Parent and Community Liaison

  • Serves as liaison with parents/guardians; teachers and school staff; and tutors.  

Staff Management and Evaluation

  • Directs teaching assistants, interns, and volunteers.  

Program Evaluation, Continuous Improvement and Data Collection

  • Monitors and ensures safety and compliance with behavioral guidelines for students.
  • Assists in participant assessment process. 

Performs any other department or agency-related duties or special projects as directed by supervisor. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Classroom experience developing and implementing educational activities and Individualized Student Plans for elementary school students.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to issues of children of color from lower socio-economic households and failing schools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English; similar fluency in Spanish a plus.
  • Knowledge of child development and learning styles.
  • Initiative and ability in designing and implementing activities to meet diverse needs.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, and disciplinary backgrounds.
  • Capable of and committed to maintaining confidentiality and exercising discretion.
  • Delegation, organization, and time management skills.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in education, child development, special education, or related field preferred.
