Volunteer Training
These are all great questions, and the EHTP offers some answers in Tutor Trainings 1-6!
- Tutor Training 1: “What is Literacy?”
& Tutor Training 2: “Reading for Meaning”
These two sessions were created by Judith Gold, from the Bank Street College of Education. You’ll learn about the skills and strategies young people need to develop in order to become good readers. Moreover, you’ll discover how you can help them improve their reading-comprehension skills and boost their confidence and speed when tackling a text. You’ll come away with a fresh vision and renewed energy to face this most important tutor challenge.
- Tutor Training 3: “Getting More Out of Your Tutoring Sessions Using Project-Based Learning”
In this training session you’ll get advice on how to best tailor your tutoring session to your tutee’s needs, so that you won’t spend the whole session doing homework or persuading your student to read! We’ll explain the foundations of the EHTP’s confidence in project-based learning and get you thinking about the kinds of creative and fun learning activities you can plan for your own lessons.
- Tutor Training 4:
“Writing for the Love of It”How can we encourage our young people to express themselves in writing? It’s not always easy, but it’s definitely worthwhile —and there’s no better time to try than during a tutoring session, when you can offer one-on-one support! We’ll share some great ideas for writing activities, suggest ways to overcome reluctance, and give you a chance to try out some techniques that might just help you awaken your tutee’s “writer within.”
- Tutor Training 5: “Diversity”
The East Harlem Tutorial Program serves a diverse population of young people. Working with them successfully means understanding more about the world each of our participants lives in, discussing the challenges they face, and coming to terms with our own experiences of acceptance, rejection, exclusion, prejudice and the expectations of family and society.
- Tutor Training 6: “Math”
For some students, math is a pleasure. For others, it’s a series of frustrating, confusing and even frightening challenges to conquer —and this is where you come in! This training will give you valuable insights into math anxiety —your tutees’ and possibly yours, as well. It will also provide you with strategies and solutions for making math manageable… and maybe even fun.
