Since 1958, the East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) has been at the vanguard of after-school education. Our programs operate within a youth development framework, built upon the premise that learning happens best in caring, engaging environments. Recognizing the uniqueness of the talents, interests and learning styles of each of our enrollees, we foster their interaction with parents and teachers through programs tailored to individual academic, creative and developmental needs.
Since the early 1990s, as the EHTP strengthened its programs and services and its annual budget multiplied from $100,000 to $3.5 million, the number of enrollees has risen from 50 to over 800. Years of continued growth and expansion have reinforced the EHTP’s commitment to serving the East Harlem community, our programs proving that participants can achieve their educational goals and ultimately develop self-expression and a passion for learning. Never before had the EHTP served more children between ages 5 and 21 as it does today. Each week, more than 800 young people and over 270 volunteers participate in our programs at multiple sites in East Harlem.
Our main objective is to help young people learn. However, we also see it as our duty to help them navigate choices in a complex world. With those goals in mind, we take it upon ourselves to provide a nurturing environment that will allow children and their families to develop their emotional and creative skills as the former grow into healthy, productive and responsible adults.
