Manhattan Neighborhood Network at the East Harlem Tutorial Program
The MNN TV production workshop at EHTP will consist of a monthly TV show run by staff and teens of the East Harlem Tutorial Program for MNN’s Youth Channel. The participants of the workshop will receive complete television production training and will be the only staffers authorized and certified to work the TV production studio.
The show will feature interviews with artists, politicians and other East Harlem residents doing positive things within the community. We will also showcase the various artistic programs run at EHTP. Such as the Salsa Dance troop, the Drop Trax rappers (who will also perform), the Robotics group will also demonstrate their robot, the Garage Band music group will perform and showcase their talent, the Film production group will show the trailer of their new feature film “Up With Me” including an interview with the director of the film Greg Takoudes. We will also feature various staff and children who are following artistic pursuits outside of EHTP. There are several poets, rappers, photographers and filmmakers on staff whose work we will feature on the show and of course the talented children of EHTP.
The community and East Harlem Tutorial will both benefit from this show in that the Manhattan residents who have public access (est.3-4 million) can see the excellent work the organization is doing for the children of East Harlem and New York. It will also let other parents and teens know the quality of work that is being done at EHTP, which can boost children and volunteer membership in the future. The workshop began in the fall of 2007, currently the staff is in an editing workshop and is looking forward to being on the air by Spring 2008.
The Harlem Movie Project:
The goal of The Harlem Movie Project is to teach and inspire a group of teenagers to make a feature-length movie about their own lives, and the daily issues they face. Through a series of workshops about screenwriting, acting, and directing, the young people learn numerous skills that will not only help them realize their creative visions for this film, but also give them in-depth media skills. Ultimately, the aim of this project is for us to teach the teens what we know as filmmakers, so that the teens will have the tools to teach us who they are as people.
We have hired a small, professional film crew to work alongside the young people, to help them create a film that is emotionally and creatively theirs, but also has a professional look and feel. The film will be submitted to major film festivals.
