Family Literacy & ESL
EHTP offers an English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL)/Family Literacy Program that meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 pm- 2 pm at EHTP. The program provides instruction by a teacher certified with a Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), who uses a practical approach to learning essential English. Students enrolled in the program comprise parents of EHTP’s after school programs as well as other residents living in East Harlem who need to learn English. Lessons are determined by both the instructor as well as the students, based upon communication they felt most critical to their daily lives. As a result of the program, these adults gain the necessary skills and confidence in speaking English to secure jobs, attend school, and create an overall better quality of life for their families and themselves.
