SPRING 2024 EHTP NEWSLETTER

Dear East Harlem Tutorial Program & Scholars Academies Families,

As spring 2024 unfolds and our school year enters its next stage, many special events, field trips and testing will begin to fill our calendars. Throughout this time, EHTP and East Harlem Scholars Academies remain committed to providing high-quality education and the best afterschool programming possible.

In the month of March, East Harlem Scholars Academies were excited to welcome Martin Palamore as our new Chief Schools Officer. Each one of our principals and staff across our network of schools is looking forward to working with Martin.

In March, the 1880 Warriors Robotics Team of the East Harlem Tutorial program placed among the top 25 teams in the FIRST New York Tech Valley Regional Competition. Congratulations to all the participants and to the OST staff for this awesome accomplishment. See you at the World Championship!!

This month, CEO Marina Cofield had the opportunity to meet and get to know many of the community partners East Harlem Tutorial Program has been working with for years, ahead of the much work our organization plans on doing in the coming months and years.

We look forward to a productive month of April as we begin to prepare for outdoor events and warmer weather toward the end of the school year.

Welcoming Chief Schools Officer Martin Palamore!

EHTP's Chief Schools Officer (CSO) is responsible for driving educational excellence across all schools & programs, of which East Harlem PK-12 Scholars Academies have a few! Please join us in welcoming a soon-to-be-familiar face, Martin Palamore, to the CSO role at Scholars Academies.

Martin is deeply committed to the East Harlem community, having been a resident for more than ten years. Throughout his career, Martin has held several positions crucial to the success and direction of the institutions he was serving, including Managing Director of Schools, Principal, Dean, and Teacher-Leader.


He is motivated by the success of students from diverse backgrounds. Throughout his career as an educator, he has contributed to expanding a high school, enhanced instructional programs for various schools, and played a pivotal role in the turnaround of a struggling charter school in the Bronx. Martin graduated from DePaul University, where he majored in Secondary Education and earned a master's in Teacher Leadership. He also completed the Relay National Principal Academy Fellowship.

Congratulations to Team #1880 Warriors of East Harlem, EHTP's Robotics All-Stars!

The  Warriors of East Harlem, FIRST Robotics Team #1880, placed among the top 25 teams in the FIRST New York Tech Valley Regional Competition on March 23, 2024. Despite many team members being new to the competitive arena, the Warriors maintained a competitive edge throughout the event and secured the prestigious Engineering Inspiration Award. Upcoming Events and Programs

Be A Part of the "We Care for Harlem" Community Crochet Mural

Join us April 9th from 4 pm to 6 pm as the community is invited to participate in the artistic creation of a crochet mural led by Carmen the Community Artist.  

The Mural which will be crocheted by the community will then be used to dress up and beautify East Harlem's section of the East River Esplanade.  During this time you will also be able have time to get to know some of your neighbors and do community bonding over refreshments.

For Incoming Families at East at Harlem Scholars Academy High School

Congratulations, your scholar has been accepted and has a guaranteed seat with East Harlem Scholars Academy High School. Your scholar could be amongst the 1st incoming freshman class to grace our new state of the art high school campus for the 2024 -2025 School Year.

Your family and scholar have been personally invited to the Accepted Celebration Event (ACE) where you can learn more about what the high school has to offer. You will get a chance to meet our entire high school team and learn about all of the extracurricular activities and services that the high school has to offer. The event will take place at our temporary location listed in the flyer below - with the opportunity to visit the new campus during the Summer of 2024. "BUILD LOVE" IS BACK BETTER THAN EVER!

Get ready for an electrifying evening on June 5th as EHTP hosts the highly anticipated annual Build Love celebration!

This year, we're thrilled to announce the 4th James Baldwin Award, to Jacqueline Woodson and celebrate our event Chair, Denis Coleman.  

We will come together to raise $3 million in support of essential programs, our Family Assistance Fund, and our East Harlem community.Learn More!

 

EHTP is Partners with Alpha Kappa Alpha 

AT EHTP, we believe our Scholars are tomorrow's leaders, this year EHTP is working with sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha to train middle schoolers from around our network with leadership skills that will carry them through life. 

This monthly development program is designed to empower young students and help them build habits that will lead to success in the future. 

All scholars between the ages of 11 - 13 are welcome to apply here.

AT OUR 2ND AVENUE CAMPUS

Students at our 2050 2nd Campus Celebrate Literacy Week with Character Day

For Literacy week scholars and teachers participated Character Day as Students were able to dress up as and read about their favorite story book characters! From Willy Wonka to Alice in Wonderland our hallways were full of imagination and energy.

 A pop up book store was opened on site and scholars were given to the opportunity purchase books, magazines and other items related to story book characters.


East Harlem Scholars Academy Middle School Celebrates Academic Excellence 

Students shared their excitement about their accomplishments these first 100 days of school, motivating further excellence as the school year continues. Their smiles speak for themselves!

Pi Day Celebrations at East Harlem Scholars Academy II

Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant Ï€ (pi). Pi Day is observed on March 14 (the 3rd month) since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant figures. 

On that same day, Principal Roman and other staff spent time bonding with Scholars actually getting pied!  

AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL

Mousetrap Car Competition

The Mousetrap Car competition held in March was an incredible event, bringing together over 50 students from various schools across East Harlem. This competition served as a platform for our students to display their talents and innovative ideas, fostering a sense of camaraderie among all participants.

More than just a contest, it challenged our scholars to apply their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, while also highlighting their knowledge of STEM subjects. The dedication and effort put forth by each participant were truly commendable.

Congratulations are in order for the winners, as well as all the participants who showcased their ingenuity. A special acknowledgment goes to the staff of East Harlem Scholars Academy High School for organizing such a successful and inspiring event. This celebration of curiosity, scholarship, and originality is a testament to the importance of fostering creativity and academic excellence within our community.


8th Graders Visit the High School

Thank you to Principal Brandon Swaby who Earlier this month spent time with our 8th grade scholars. He spoke to them about the transition into High School and about the options they have here at East Harlem Scholars Academy High School as this next class will be entering our new building for School year 24-25.

EHTP ACROSS CAMPUSES

Third Graders Visit with Fishing Window Authors

This month’s visit with Fishing Window authors was a magical experience for scholars in this partnered event with @centropr! Scholars daydreamed along with the book’s character Rudeday, a passionate artist who finds joy in unexpected places. They followed along as he discovers the power of art, friendship, and intergenerational connections through a whimsical window-fishing exchange with a curious little boy upstairs.


EHTP CEO Welcomes Community Leaders and Tours New High School Building Construction

EHTP CEO Marina Cofield met with community partners for what turned out to be more than just an introduction.

The discussion turned to the many ways our organizations can collaborate in the coming months and years for the benefit of our youth.

Partners also got a quick tour of our New High School building set to open this year serving hundreds of East Harlem youth.
